The first visual review: key to its development

80% of what a child learns in his or her first years of life enters through the eyes. An undetected visual problem in time (such as a vague eye, a strabismus or a high degree) can directly interfere with its motor, cognitive development and future learning. Children do not know if they see evil; they simply assume that the world is as they see it.

Therefore, in Optica San Sebastián we follow the protocol to perform the first visual review at the age of 6 months, and then annual reviews. We have objective tests and adapted games to evaluate the vision of the little ones, even before they know how to speak.

What do we evaluate in a child visual review?

Our child assessment goes far beyond trying to graduate. It is a complete assessment of the development of the visual system:

  • Visual acuity assessment: By testing adapted to your age (follow-up tests or drawings).
  • Detection of Refractive Deffects: We check for myopia, hypermetropy, or astigmatism that need to be corrected.
  • Assessment of Ocular Motility: We ensure that the muscles of the eyes move in a coordinated and soft way.
  • Detection of Streschus: We checked the alignment of the eyes to rule out deviations.
  • Assessment of Primitive Reflections: We value the integration of reflexes that can affect the visual and motor development.
  • Ocular health: We review the transparency of the media and the general state of the eye.
